5 Common Automotive Steering Issues

Oct 31, 2023

Steering issues are usually one of those car problems that get people to the local auto repair shop without delay. According to Hedges & Company, there were an estimated 1.446 billion vehicles worldwide as of 2022. With all of those vehicles on the road, responsible owners understand the importance of properly functioning steering systems. The next time you experience one of these common steering issues, be sure to schedule a visit with your local auto repair shop as soon as you can.

1. Steering Wheel That Shakes While You're Driving

This is one of the most common signs that there's a steering issue happening with your car. The next time your steering wheel starts shaking or vibrating, pay attention to what type of driving conditions there are, where you are, and any other possible causes. This information will be helpful when you call to book your service appointment. If the problem only occurs when you're using the brakes, then it's likely an issue with your rotors or another component of the braking system. When the problem occurs when you're slowing down or speeding up, the cause could be the car's suspension or an issue with the tires. Your local mechanic can get to the root of the problem and provide a fix. It's not safe, nor is it comfortable, to drive a car when the steering wheel shakes and shimmies.

2. Electric Steering That Sticks

Electric and automatic steering systems are meant to make your driving experience easier. If you start to notice that your steering is starting to stick or feels stiff, it could be due to a number of different causes. Usually, the cause of your problem is some type of electrical issue, and you'll need to bring in your car for a diagnostic check-up. Due to the nature of today's electrical systems, this isn't usually an issue that can be repaired, Whichever components of the electrical system that aren't functioning properly will need to be replaced. Automatic or electric steering should make driving and steering easier, not more difficult. It's important any stuck or stiff steering is assessed and repaired as soon as possible.

3. Fluid Leakage

Another common problem that folks experience with their steering systems is fluid leaks. Firstly, it's important to only use steering fluid in the system. There was a time when transmission fluid could also be used, but that practice isn't thought to be a good one anymore. There are many causes of fluid leaks, including loose O-rings and seals that have broken. The proper level of fluid is important and protects your system while helping it work properly. Don't wait to have the leak checked. No matter the cause, it's a problem that should be fixed in a timely manner.

4. An Off-Center Steering Wheel

The easiest way to spot an off-center steering wheel is to drive down a straight road. If you have to turn the steering wheel to stay in the middle of the lane, you may have an issue. One of the most common causes of an off-center steering wheel is hitting a curb and disrupting the steering system. Other times, it's due to cars sliding into other objects and vehicles during inclement weather. The end result is a shifted or bent steering column that may or may not be able to be repaired. If a replacement is necessary, don't worry, it's a straightforward switch. Even if you're not sure of the cause of your off-center steering wheel, it's important to have it assessed and repaired at your local
auto repair shop.

5. Steering That Drifts or Pulls

Even when this is an issue commonly associated with the car's steering system, it's usually caused by a problem with the alignment. Tires should also be looked at as a possible culprit. If they're low on air, or even filled at an uneven level, your tires could just need a bit of attention to correct the issue. If that's not the cause, then you'll want to get your car checked for possible suspension issues. This isn't a problem that you want to let linger. It's important to get to the bottom of the cause and get everything back in good working order.
